The upper valley rises to 650 m (about 2,000 ft). This is the zone where sands, calcareous shales and limestones predominate. The ground is of a white limestone type, with a proportion of sand which differentiates its drainage capability  from that of other similar areas. The result is wines distinguished by mineral tones.

The lower valley at around 600 m is made up of horizontal, discontinuous strata of heterogeneous clays, gypsums and rounded pebbles.
